Managing Anger and Conflict

"Seek first to understand; then to be understood."

- Stephen Covey,

The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People

Anger is a legitimate human emotion and conflict a natural and inevitable by-product of our many differences. Both, however, if managed poorly, can cause grievous stress and concern in the workplace. Bright and capable individuals are often passed over for promotion, avoided on the job, even laid off because they never learned to manage their anger or the conflicts that frequently occur in the course of simply doing their job.

Learning to handle strong emotion in an appropriate way is a key skill for anyone who wants to do well in the workplace, no matter what the industry or job structure. And channeling the conflict into valuable, non-threatening verbal exchanges among talented workers is important to the growth and success of the organization.

In this workshop, participants will:

Study and practice several approaches to handling conflict situations

Learn what triggers conflict and how to recognize it early in the process

Assess their own individual approach to conflict and anger management

Understand the characteristics of assertive, non-assertive, and aggressive behaviors

Learn and practice non-threatening assertion skills in typical work situations

Receive feedback on their approach to resolving issues

Discuss situations that "trap" them and make assertion skills difficult

Learn and practice various techniques for dealing with anger in the moment
