Effective strategic planning requires both a backward- and forward-thinking (systems thinking) process by the entire leadership team. Together, in this way, they will define their ideal future vision and core strategies for achieving it. It is important for the entire leadership team to participate in this process for the simple reason that people support what they help create. |

A beginning exercise encourages leaders to develop a shared vision of the future and to communicate core values and strategies. It aligns everyone’s goals to the same end – the customer. This makes decision-making easier, by far. Then a set of specific and quantifiable measures can be developed that identify success year after year and serve as a determinant for budgets, priorities, staffing, and operational goals.
